GREAT IDEAS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR COMPUTER

Major computer manufacturers recommend routine preventative maintenance to extend hardware life and maintain top performance of your personal computer. If this is not done, dirt and dust can accumulate inside the computer. This dust can lead to problems such as lost data, crashes, read write errors, or even worse, total system failure. Dust is a real enemy of every PC. Most computer experts recommend that your computer be thoroughly cleaned at LEAST once a year. Even in the cleanest environments, a personal computer will become filled with dust in a few months. You should regularly clean and blow out the inside of your computer to keep it working optimally and prevent it from overheating and reducing the life of your processor or other components. Simple vacuuming is good. Using several cans of compressed air is better. However, use of a good compressor-driven evacuation is best. Listed below are the some of the routine things you should do on a regular basis to extend the life of your equipment and make it run faster and be safer:

NOTE: before starting to clean be sure to power down your computer and peripherals and disconnect all of them and the power cord.

	Scandisk the entire hard drive at least monthly. If you are a heavy computer user you might want to do this weekly.
	Defragment each hard drive monthly. If you have a lot of files and use your computer every day you might want to consider doing this weekly.
	Run a virus check of your entire computer at least weekly. If you do a lot of work on the Internet, you might want to consider doing this more often and obtaining a Spyware and/or Adware program to protect your data. Spyware/Adware can drastically slow down your computer and can even deliver your personal data to others without your knowledge.
	Blow out the inside to remove built up dust at least twice a year
	Spray a lint free cloth with any good cleaning solution and apply to a computer screen to remove dust and fingerprints
	Clean your keyboard by tipping it over and spray with canned air. Spray a cotton swab to clean individual keys and between the rows and sides of keys
	Clean the outside of the mouse with a lint free cloth sprayed with a cleaning solution. Turn the mouse over and remove the bottom plastic plate and thoroughly clean the mouse ball
	Don't forget to clean your mouse pad and any surfaces the mouse and keyboard rest on and the entire computer workspace
